São Miguel

São Miguel is the largest island, called "The Green Island" for good reason. There are some fantastic crater lakes, hot springs, sulphurous steam rising out of the ground and ample territory for exploring over many days. We managed a quick tour of three days duration, spending the night at a quinta in Nordeste on the far side of the island. Throughout the island, black and white Holstein dairy cows are seen grazing among clumps of calla lillies. No factory farming here!
